প্রথম মহাযুদ্ধের আরম্ভ ১৯১৪ সালের জুলাইয়ে। সেটা ১৩২১ বঙ্গাব্দের শ্রাবণ মাস। সাত সমুদ্র তেরো নদী পেরিয়ে ভারতবর্ষের সে মহাসমরের সংবাদ এসে পৌঁছোয়। যুদ্ধের খবর প্রথম উল্লেখযোগ‌্যভাবে প্রকাশিত হয় ঠাকুরবাড়ির মাসিক পত্রিকা ভারতী-তে। তারপর একে একে ভারতবর্ষ, প্রবাসী, মাসিক বসুমতী, সমর-সংবাদ প্রভৃতি বিভিন্ন পত্রপত্রিকার মহাযুদ্ধের সংবাদ প্রকাশিত হতে থাকে। ভারতী—তেই সে বছর ‘বর্তমান ইউরোপীয় সমর’ নাম এক দীর্ঘ নিবন্ধ প্রকাশিত হয়। বাংলা সাময়িক পত্রপত্রিকার যুদ্ধ বিষয়ক যেসকল লেখা প্রকাশিত হয়, তার কিছু স্মৃতিমূলক_ প্রত‌্যক্ষভাবে যুদ্ধে অংশগ্রহণ করেছিলেন যাঁরা তাঁদের জার্নাল ও চিঠি। আবার কোনো কোনো লেখায় আমরা পাই যু্দ্ধে বিষয়ক বিশ্লেষণধর্মী প্রবন্ধ-নিবন্ধ। এ ছাড়াও মিলবে স্বদেশ থেকে বহুদূরে যুদ্ধে ময়দানে যা ঘটে চলেছে তার তাৎক্ষণিক বিবরণ ও সেইসঙ্গে যু্দ্ধপ্রকরণ নিয়ে অনুসন্ধানী নিবন্ধও। এই মহাযুদ্ধে গোটা বিশ্ব দুই শিবিরে বিভক্ত হয়ে গিয়েছিল। একদিকে ছিল ইংল‌্যান্ড, বেলজিয়াম, ইটালি সার্বিয়া, রাশিয়া, মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মতো দেশ, অন‌্যদিকে জার্মানি, অস্ট্রিয়া, বুলগেরিয়া, তুর্কস্থান প্রমুখ শক্তি। কিন্তু প্রথম মহাযুদ্ধের আনুপূর্বিক ইতিহাস বিবৃত করা এই গ্রন্থের উদ্দেশ‌্য নয়। এই মহাযুদ্ধে ভারতবর্ষের ভূমিকাও আমাদের আলোচনার পরিধিভুক্ত হয়নি। বঙ্গসন্তান হিসেবে যে প্রশ্ন আমাদের মনে উঠে আসে_ বাঙালিরা কি এতে শামিল হয়েছিলেন ? তার উত্তর খুঁজতে গিয়ে সমসাময়িক বাংলা পত্রপত্রিকায় যুদ্ধ বিষয়ক সংবাদাদি সংগ্রহ করার পর যা পাওয়া গেল, তার ঐতিহাসিক গুরুত্ব অপরিসীম। একদিকে এই সংকলন খোঁজ দেয় প্রথম মহাযুদ্ধের কারণে উদ্ভুত আন্তর্জাতিক পরিস্থিতির দেশীয় মূল‌্যায়নের। অন‌্যদিকে তা আঘাত করে ‘বাঙালি ভীরুজাতি’_এই ভ্রান্ত ধারণার মূলে। আমরা জানতে পারি, বাঙালির শুধু দলে দলে এই মহাসমরে যোগদানই করেননি, তাঁদের রক্তে রাঙা হয়ে উঠেছিল বহু বিদেশি যুদ্ধপ্রান্তর।

]]> Dr. Amit Dey is a Professor of History, the Department of History, Centre For Advanced Studies, University of Calcutta, India. He received a Ph.D. in History in September 1999 from the University of London for his work on The Image of the Prophet in Bengali Muslim Piety; 1850-1947 and completed his doctoral research as a Commonwealth Scholar being affiliated to the Department of History, Royal Holloway, University of London. His area of specialization is islam and islamic Mysticism in Medieval and Modern South Asia.

The present book, which is beyond the constraints of rigid periodization, is an endeavour to challenge certain stereotypes relating to Islam, Sufism, folk-songs and inter-community relations in the South Asian context. By consulting Persian, Urdu, Bengali and English sources, the present work suggests that Sufism was more heterogeneous and complex than we are prepared to accept.
