BANDE MATARAM – THE VOICE OF A NATION

Bande Mataram: The Voice of a Nation is a richly illustrated documentary tribute to one of the most influential symbols of India’s freedom movement. Tracing the remarkable journey of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s immortal song from its birth in Anandamath to its recognition as India’s National Song, this volume presents a rare assemblage of archival documents, original texts, English translations, nationalist newspapers, early national flags, constitutional debates, photographs, philatelic and numismatic commemorations, gramophone recordings, and patriotic visual art. Drawing upon rare and often little-known sources, it offers a comprehensive account of the song’s literary,
historical, political, and cultural legacy. Beautifully produced in a large-format edition, this work is both an authoritative reference and a visual chronicle of the enduring voice that inspired a nation’s struggle for freedom.

“One day-twenty or thirty years from now-you will see Bengal driven to ecstasy by this song, Bengalis will be stirred to their depths by it.”

-Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay

“Bande Mataram is not merely a song-it is a mantra. Every mantra has a Rishi (seer) and one or more deities. The Rishi of the Bande Mataram mantra is the high priest Bankimchandra, the founder of the Santan community, and the deity is the Motherland.”

-Bipin Chandra Pal

“Among the Rishis of the later age we have at last realised that we must include the name of the man who gave us the reviving Mantra which is creating a new India, the Mantra Bande Mataram.

-Sri Aurobindo

“Our Bande Mataram mantra is not a hymn in praise of Bengal alone-it is an invocation to the Universal Mother. If we first utter that sacred chant today, then in the ages to come this mantra will echo, one by one, across all lands.”

-Rabindranath Tagore
